When James’ Beetle first came through the doors, it was heavily corroded, structurally compromised, and well beyond what most would consider viable. But this build was never about saving originality for its own sake, it was about realising a vision.
What followed is a ground-up custom restoration that showcases exactly what Retro Vehicle Restorations does best.
This Beetle didn’t arrive as a restoration project in the usual sense.
It arrived as a problem.
From Scrap to Structure
The starting point was a shell that had suffered extensive rot. Floors, panels, and structural areas were all affected. This wasn’t a case of patching the only way forward was to strip back and rebuild properly.
This project has become a clear demonstration of our metal fabrication and restoration capability:
- Extensive rust removal
- Hand-fabricated repair sections
- Structural reconstruction carried out to concours standards
- Panel work refined for fit, alignment, and longevity
What emerged is a Beetle that is structurally better than it ever left the factory, while still retaining its classic identity.
A True One-Off
This Beetle is not a catalogue build.
It’s not a replica.
It’s not something you’ll see again.
It’s a true Retro Revivals one-off, taking a car that was effectively written off and elevating it to concours-level quality while staying absolutely true to the customer’s vision.
Custom, Not Factory-Correct
Like several of our recent builds, this is not a faithful factory restoration and that’s entirely by design.
James wanted something personal. Something distinctive. Something that stood apart without losing its classic roots.
The result is a Beetle that blends classic shape with subtle but deliberate custom bodywork modifications, all executed in metal rather than filler-led shortcuts.

The finished paintwork is amazing.
